Numbers never lie and in our case prove what we are saying quite a while now. Android is here to stay, no sorry, to dominate the market is the right expression. No more writing tons of Objective C code to achieve a transition and a button. Just put your Apache libraries along with your project and deploy. Not to mention Apple’s policy of app acceptance and review policy. Put also in the equation the massive device support for Android by the end of this year and you get the picture. Android has already overcome Windows Mobile and growing.

I have a project with overwhelming budget for GIS and civil protection.
A sub project is a pda GIS system with the ability to export files into
shapefile format, so that could be loaded automatically into an Oracle
Spatial database, over an ArcSDE server. The thing is, that the only
reliable software is ArcPad that I hate both it’s functionality and the
bitter license cost.

From what I am aware of, no open source software with similar
functionality exists. So I have decided to start such an application
under Apache 2.0 license using the google maps API on the Android
Console. Android has grown, to be my favorite mobile framework and
google maps API offers out-of-the-box functionality such as

1. Coordinates transformation (Here in Greece we need ΕΓΣΑ 87).
2. Map visualization with raster support.
3. Polygons poly lines and point capture.
4. Any kind of API integration. In our case I will use Oracle’s
   Shapefile import/export library. Currently a part of the MapBuilder
   distribution.

Any contributors are welcome. Project will be hosted on google code. Stay tuned for further news.

Apparently  this year, Santa will visit me at 5 of January according to FedEx, delivering my HTC G1 Unlocked Developer Edition Android!!! I ordered the phone from Android Market something that intends to be the rival awe of apple distribution channel iTunes.

The first application I am thinking getting on, is something similar to ArcPad for hand-held onsite digitization and geo reference undel GPL licence.  Any contributors ??

Being a gadget lover and an Android believer, i could not ask for something more appropriate for my Christmas wish to Santa.
